Disclosure up front: we make PicDock, one of the six apps in this table, so we are not neutral. To keep it fair, every fact about the other five apps comes from that app's own US English Google Play listing or official website, checked on October 10, 2026, and is linked where it appears. Every PicDock feature and price comes from our public fact sheet. Where a listing does not say something, the table says "not stated on listing" rather than guessing. Where another app does something better, we say so.
Short answer: all six read photos from an SMB share. If your library lives behind WebDAV, Synology Photos or Immich, Pixette lists the widest set of NAS protocols. If you serve media over DLNA / UPnP (Plex, Emby, Jellyfin), nFolio is the one that lists it. If you want the biggest install base and Google Drive as well, Fotoo has it. PicDock fits if you want SMB plus Dropbox, OneDrive and iCloud Shared Albums in one slideshow, with every photo source except web upload free.
Looking for what to check before choosing — SMB versions, sub-folders, refresh, and what happens when the NAS goes offline? That is in our companion checklist: NAS photo frame apps: what to check before you pick one. This page is the comparison table.
The comparison table
"Listing" means the app's Google Play page in US English. Last update and installs are what each Play listing showed on October 10, 2026; both change often.

App by app: where each one is stronger
Pixette — the widest NAS protocol list
Pixette's listing names four ways in: WebDAV (Nextcloud, ownCloud, Synology, TrueNAS), Synology Photos albums, a self-hosted Immich server, and SMB / CIFS. It says it can index "even 2 million+ files", and it adds EXIF filters by date range, orientation and location on a map (listing). Its website says it also runs on iPhone, iPad, Apple TV and Android TV (pixette.app). Better than PicDock: WebDAV, Synology Photos and Immich, none of which PicDock supports. Keep in mind: the free version is limited to 500 files, and unlimited files are part of an annual subscription.
nFolio — DLNA / UPnP and the TV
nFolio's listing is built around the home media server: DLNA and UPnP servers (Synology, Plex, Emby, Jellyfin, Serviio, Twonky and JRiver are named as tested) as well as SMB shares, plus installing on Android TV or a Chromecast streamer and casting to a Chromecast (listing). It plays videos from the NAS and shows clock and weather. Better than PicDock: DLNA / UPnP support and Chromecast casting. If your photos are already in Plex or Jellyfin, start here.
Diarama — "on this day" memories and strict SMB security
Diarama picks photos by date — "this day one year ago", this day or this month in recent years — and reads them from device storage or a NAS over SMB, finding SMB devices on your Wi-Fi by itself. Its listing says NAS connections "require SMB3 with signing and use encrypted transfer by default", that NAS photos are cached so the slideshow keeps running when the NAS sleeps, and that it has "no account, no cloud service, no ads, no usage analytics, no tracking" (listing). Better than PicDock: date-based memory selection and encrypted SMB3 by default. Keep in mind: it is very new — 10+ installs on the listing, and its website still describes it as an early version with an open test "starting soon" (diarama.app).
Fravora — radio, voice control and Immich
Fravora's listing combines SMB / NAS with Google Photos, OneDrive, Dropbox and Immich, and adds built-in internet radio, voice control with on-device wake-phrase detection, scheduling and an anti-burn-in shift for 24/7 use (listing). Its website adds Google Drive and video formats (MOV, MP4, MKV) (fravora.app). Better than PicDock: Immich, Google Drive (per its website), radio and voice control. Keep in mind: the listing puts weather, "recursive subfolder scans" and expanded photo sources in the premium version, and the listing was last updated in August.
Fotoo — the long track record
Fotoo has by far the largest install base in this table (1M+ on its listing) and streams from Google Photos, Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive and Samba / SMB, with background music, weather and time, scheduled auto-play and a screensaver mode (listing). Better than PicDock: a much longer track record and Google Drive. Keep in mind: the listing does not say whether videos play, or what the in-app purchases cost. We compare the two in more detail in Fotoo alternatives.
PicDock — our app
From the fact sheet: PicDock reads Synology, QNAP, Windows shared folders and other SMB servers, with sub-folders, and refreshes NAS and cloud sources automatically at intervals so new files appear without touching the tablet. Videos on the share play once you turn on the opt-in SMB video beta. The NAS can be mixed with device storage, Google Photos (picker), Dropbox, OneDrive and iCloud Shared Albums in one slideshow, with a clock, current weather, night mode, a sleep schedule and auto-start on charging. Every photo source except web upload is free, NAS included.
What PicDock doesn't do
- No WebDAV, DLNA / UPnP or FTP. Network storage means SMB only. If your NAS photos are only reachable over WebDAV or a DLNA server, Pixette or nFolio list those.
- No Synology Photos or Immich integration. PicDock reads folders on the share, not those apps' albums.
- No Google Drive. Fotoo lists it; Fravora's website does.
- NAS video is a beta and off by default. Cloud videos (Google Photos, Dropbox, OneDrive, iCloud) are not played.
- A shorter track record than Fotoo. 10K+ installs against Fotoo's 1M+.
What PicDock costs
PicDock on Google Play is free to download, and every photo source except web upload is free — NAS / SMB included. Optional Premium is sold as lifetime, yearly or monthly; the lifetime option is US$19.99, yearly and monthly prices are shown in the app and vary by country, and new installs get a 7-day trial of all features. Premium adds all 30+ transitions, hourly and 5-day forecasts, more clock designs, web upload, the pet filter and person grouping, and removes ads. Ads never appear on the slideshow itself; in the free version a banner can appear in settings screens. The Amazon Appstore edition for Fire tablets is a paid app (US$4.99) with no ads and no in-app purchases.
FAQ
Which Android photo frame apps can show photos from a NAS?
Going by their own Google Play listings (checked October 10, 2026), Pixette, nFolio, Diarama, Fravora, Fotoo and PicDock all read photos from a NAS. All six list SMB. Pixette also lists WebDAV, Synology Photos and Immich; nFolio also lists DLNA / UPnP servers; Fravora also lists Immich.
Which NAS photo frame app supports WebDAV or DLNA?
Pixette's listing names WebDAV (Nextcloud, ownCloud, Synology, TrueNAS). nFolio's listing names DLNA and UPnP servers, with Synology, Plex, Emby, Jellyfin, Serviio, Twonky and JRiver tested. PicDock, Diarama, Fravora and Fotoo list SMB only for network storage. None of the six listings mentions FTP.
Can these apps play videos stored on the NAS?
nFolio's listing says it slideshows photos and videos from NAS storage. Pixette's listing mentions photos and videos, and its website describes a built-in VLC-powered player. Fravora's website lists MOV, MP4 and MKV support. PicDock plays videos from an SMB share as an opt-in beta. The Fotoo and Diarama listings do not state video support.
Is PicDock free to use with a NAS?
Yes. PicDock on Google Play is free to download and every photo source except web upload is free, including NAS / SMB shares. Optional Premium is sold as lifetime, yearly or monthly, and new installs get a 7-day trial of all features.
In short
For a NAS-fed frame, the protocol your NAS already speaks decides most of it: WebDAV, Synology Photos or Immich point to Pixette, DLNA / UPnP to nFolio, and plain SMB works with all six. After that, pick on what else you need on the same screen — Fravora's radio, Diarama's "on this day" memories, Fotoo's Google Drive and long track record, or PicDock's mix of NAS with Dropbox, OneDrive and iCloud Shared Albums, free for every source except web upload.
